As promised, NVIDIA launched its Tegra 2 platform today at CES in its keynote, and it’s great. The new 40nm processor is energy efficent and can still do full HD streaming as well as HDMI out. The current OSes supported are Windows Mobile, CE, Android, and support for Chrome OS coming soon. According to NVIDIA, there are “hundereds” of testing units out there and developers can order theirs this month. The Tegra 2 will not be in any netbook or smartbook, since consumers will think they are getting a full blown computer – thus limiting the option to tablets, some already in the works, with five to ten inch screens. After the launch of Tegra 2, don’t expect the orginial to just vanish, it’ll still be sold in some smartphones still to come.
